Switzerland is known for its high reputation in the fields of education and health care.

For this reason, many people interested in medicine flock to the world-famous medical faculties. Unlike other European countries, however, Switzerland is quite strict when it comes to admission to medical studies via EMS.

What is the EMS?

The so-called aptitude test for medical studies (EMS) has been used for human medicine studies since 1998, for veterinary medicine in 1999 and for dentistry in Switzerland in 2004. You have to be among the top 30 per cent of participants to get a place at university. There is a strong increase in the number of applications every year. In 2021, the rate was approximately 4520 and it continues to rise steadily. To register and indicate a priority list consisting of the University of Zurich, University of Basel, ETH Zurich, University of Bern and University of Fribourg, go to the "Swissuniversities" page. Not only the test percentage rank, but also the place of residence are decisive for whether or not consideration is given to the priority list. If you do not pass the EMS, you have the chance to repeat it after one year.

Our student Valeria Steiger made it, but had to experience a big shock

Valeria successfully completed the EMS and lived her dream of studying medicine in Switzerland. However, not for very long. After she had to repeat an important exam as well as a year, she was kicked out and faced nothing. This was certainly a big shock and a bitter disappointment for her. After an emotional roller coaster ride, a friend gave her the idea to study abroad and Valeria discovered the University in Bratislava. With our help, she got a place at university and can return to her home country in a few years with her recognised degree and practise medicine there.

Do you have a similar story to Valeria's and would like to have security? We will be happy to advise you and inform you about all your options. You can study medicine with us at 18 different universities in 8 countries in Europe. Your doors are open to you.
