Medical studies in Split, Croatia and Coburg, Germany

The School of Medicine at the University of Split (USSM) was originally founded in 1974 as part of the University of Zagreb. Initially, medical students could complete the last two years of training in Split. Over the years, the School of Medicine was able to establish itself as an independent faculty and was affiliated to the University of Split in 1997. While initially only human medicine studies in Croatian were possible, another study programme, completely in English, was founded in 2011: Medical Studies in English.

The USSM was able to repeat this success story internationally once again when a cooperation with a German hospital association in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia was launched in 2016. In the partner programme, students of the Medical Studies in English programme complete the first three pre-clinical years at USSM. From the 4th year onwards, the cohort is divided into students who remain in Split and students who move to Germany to join the German Hospital Association in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia. The courses and content remain the same in both groups, but the students of the hospital network are largely trained by doctors in the surrounding area and spend their practical placements in the clinics and doctors' practices there.

  • Students of the hospital association receive the "Medical Doctor" degree from the University of Split
  • Graduates receive a degree that is recognised throughout the EU
  • The German hospital association in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia offers numerous financing options and supports the path to specialist training

More information

Medical studies at the University of Split, School of Medicine

Students achieve 60 ECTS points per academic year, i.e. a total of 360 ECTS points in the 6 academic years. The degree programme is structured in course blocks, in which you study one subject after the other and immediately complete it with an examination. So you don't have to study for several subjects and exams at the same time and can concentrate on one subject area.

The exercises and seminars are held in small groups of 5-6 students to ensure optimal supervision by the lecturer and to give each individual the opportunity to learn close to the patient's bedside.

Admission procedure

Getting to know the person behind the certificates - that is the goal of the admission procedure. Application documents can be submitted by e-mail. A committee then selects suitable candidates who are invited to a personal meeting. The decisive factor is not the Abitur grade, but the personal motivation behind it, e.g. good grades in science, voluntary work or previous knowledge. A TMS test is not necessary, but can be submitted if you wish. An officially recognised proof of solid English skills (min. B2 level) and a certificate of an 8-week nursing internship must be submitted by the time you start your studies. During the selection days, individual interviews are held with applicants to get to know each other. You will have the opportunity to show how much you are passionate about studying medicine. In a 15-minute presentation on a topic of your choice, you can then fully convince the committee of your merits.

Financing options

The hospital association in Upper Franconia and Southern Thuringia strives to ensure that, in addition to the NC, the financial situation does not have to be a hurdle to studying medicine. Sponsors from politics and business award scholarships that cover the entire tuition fees for the 6 years of study. In addition, there is the possibility that the hospital association will pay the tuition fees if the graduate completes the specialist training in a clinic of the hospital association.

In addition, an education loan is offered in cooperation with the Sparkasse Coburg-Lichtenfels, which is based on the KfW interest rates. This loan covers the tuition fees. After graduation, the loan is suspended for two years and you can first look into starting a specialist training programme. After these two years, i.e. 8 years after starting your studies, you then start repaying the loan. The instalments are based on the average starting salary of a doctor, which is usually much higher than in other professions.
