Studying medicine abroad is one of the most exciting parts of a student's life. It is a unique experience that provides the perfect opportunity to travel, meet new friends, learn a new language and, of course, receive an excellent medical education. Especially those interested in medicine take the chance to study medicine abroad. The admission requirements for medical studies in Austria, Germany and Switzerland are becoming increasingly difficult and the places more limited. We asked Felix, a medical student, how he is getting on in his medical studies in Riga and how futuredoctor has been able to support him best so far.

Can you tell me a little about yourself or introduce yourself briefly?

I am Felix, 23 years old, come from near Stuttgart and have been studying medicine in Riga since this September. Before that, I did a three-year training as an OTA (Operation Technical Assistant) and then worked there for a year. Before my training, I did an FSJ (Voluntary Social Year) in the emergency room at the hospital in Schorndorf for half a year and before that I did my Abitur (A-levels) in 2016.

When did you decide to study medicine abroad/Riga and why?

In my school years, I was never a 1.0 candidate, so I was somewhat limited in my options. Studying abroad was therefore always an option. I applied via futuredoctor. to Comenius University in Bratislava, whereupon the agency made me an offer to apply to other universities in the same year. The pictures of the university in Riga appealed to me quite a bit and ultimately contributed to my decision to move there without any foreboding or prior knowledge.

Do you regret the move to Riga?

I definitely don't regret moving to Riga. I like the city and the university, which is super new and looks really good. In Riga, the 60 international students are divided into groups and therefore classes are formed with about 10-15 people. This makes it much easier for people like me, who study in a rather school-oriented way and not in large lecture halls with several hundred people.

How do you spend your free time in Riga?

Because the university places a lot of emphasis on keeping up with the material and we have to write 1-2 tests per week, we don't have too much free time. But in the free time we do have, we usually go out or go out to eat or party on the weekends. We haven't yet looked into leisure activities like playing tennis, but that will certainly come in the summer, when we will then pursue one or the other sport that we are interested in.

Why did you choose futuredoctor?

I came across futuredoctor because a friend of mine was referred to futuredoctor. and she recommended the agency to me. I also contacted other agencies and made enquiries, but futuredoctor. convinced me with the overall package, the price-performance ratio and the discussions with the study advisors.

In which situation did you feel particularly supported by futuredoctor?

I originally got a rejection for the university in Riga, but the student counsellors were very keen to find out the reason for my rejection and to solve it. With their support, I was able to get a place and I am very grateful to them.

What has been the biggest challenge for you so far in terms of studying medicine abroad?

I was never the great language master, so I had a lot of respect for studying in English at first. However, it worked out quite well and there was not much of a challenge in that respect.

Would you recommend futuredoctor and why?

I would definitely recommend futuredoctor! Their services range from mediation to support and all this at a great price/performance ratio. I feel very well looked after and free from stress.
