The city of Sofia at a glance

Bulgaria's capital is often overlooked by visitors heading to the coast or the ski resorts, but they are missing out on something special. With a population of 1.5 million people, it is no wonder that more than 105,000 students are studying here. Sofia is not a large metropolis, but a modern, young city that gives off an eclectic, exotic feel with its picturesque landscape, onion-domed churches, Ottoman mosques and stubborn Red Army monuments. Excavation work carried out during the construction of the metro revealed treasures of Roman ruins dating back almost 2,000 years to the time when the city was called "Serdica". Away from the buildings and boulevards, extensive parks and well-tended gardens provide a welcome change of scenery, and the ski slopes and hiking trails of the mighty Vitosha Mountain are only a short bus ride from the centre. Sofia is home to many interesting museums, galleries, restaurants and clubs, these might tempt you to stay here and explore the city further. Sofia is an excellent city for young people who like a dynamic and diverse lifestyle. Students have a wealth of events to choose from, most of which are perfect for networking and broadening horizons for the medical future. But there are also a number of events and opportunities to switch off and enjoy yourself.
