University of Health Sciences in Kaunas

LSMU stands for above-average teaching standards, a high degree of practical relevance and intercultural diversity. Over 70 nations are represented among the students - from Europe to Asia and the Americas. The medical university is closely networked: co-operations with over 140 international universities enable exchange semesters, joint research projects and internships worldwide.

The high level of interdisciplinary teaching is particularly noteworthy, not only within human medicine, but also through the interlinking with the fields of dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and health sciences. This scientific breadth promotes critical thinking and enables future doctors to take a holistic view of human and animal health.

Kaunas: Lithuania's second-largest city with high study quality

The city of Kaunas is located in the centre of Lithuania, at the confluence of the Memel (Nemunas) and Neris rivers, and has a population of around 304,000. It is not only known for its Bauhaus-style architecture and medieval old town, but also for its young, student atmosphere. Thanks to its good transport network, numerous leisure activities and cultural life with theatres, museums and cafés, Kaunas is considered one of the most liveable student cities in Europe.

Kaunas was European Capital of Culture in 2022 - further proof of the cosmopolitan, creative and academic atmosphere of this metropolis.

Variety of degree programmes: human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy

LSMU offers a wide range of degree programmes in the health sector, including:

  • Human medicine

  • Dentistry

  • Veterinary medicine

  • Pharmacy

  • Psychology

  • Public health and other health science programmes

All medically relevant degree programmes are offered entirely in English and are EU-compliant - which means that degrees are recognised throughout Europe and a transfer within the EU is possible without any problems.

Study programmes & study language

The language of instruction for all medical degree programmes is English. This enables international students to optimally integrate into the academic community and at the same time learn or deepen their knowledge of a globally relevant specialised language. The focus on medical English is also a great advantage later in professional practice, as international research, diagnostic standards and guidelines are published almost exclusively in English.

The English-language curriculum also gives students access to international exchange programmes, research partnerships and career paths throughout Europe and beyond.

Duration of study, Bachelor-Master system & degree

The medical degree programme at LSMU is divided into the Bachelor's and Master's system. The Master's degree in human medicine or dentistry is usually obtained after six years of study (12 semesters). The programme has a modular structure, is practice-oriented and follows the latest didactic standards. Examinations are both written and practical - in the form of clinical case analyses, oral presentations and multiple-choice knowledge tests.

At the end of the programme, graduates are awarded academic degrees:

  • M.D. (Medical Doctor) - Human Medicine

  • D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) - Dentistry

  • D.V.M. (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) - Veterinary Medicine

Recognition in the EU in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC

All medical degree programmes at the University of Health Sciences in Kaunas meet the requirements of EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. This means that the degrees are fully recognised in Germany, Austria and all other EU member states.

This means that you can start specialist training (residency) directly after your studies, register in medical registers or even take up a Lateral entry in clinical positions in the DACH region - without any detours or bureaucratic hurdles.

Training & campus structure

Centre for academic-practical teaching: clinics & research

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) consistently emphasises the combination of academic theory and clinical practice. At the heart of this philosophy is the close link with Kaunas University Hospital, which is located on the campus. Here, medical students gain important practical experience from their first year of study - whether in nursing, primary care or observing surgical procedures.

Thanks to this direct connection, students can apply theoretical knowledge directly, experience clinical pictures in real life and be involved in medical procedures under the guidance of experienced medical specialists. The university is also involved in numerous international research projects - with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases, Oncologyneurology and public health.

The university is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Students learn with the help of:

  • Digital patient records

  • 3D anatomy simulations

  • High-tech laboratories

  • E-learning platforms with interactive modules

Interdisciplinary cooperation & experiential learning

A unique feature of LSMU is the consistent interdisciplinary teaching concept. Students of human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy are trained together in interprofessional projects. This multi-perspective exchange promotes teamwork, communication and an in-depth understanding of therapy processes - indispensable skills for later everyday clinical practice.

In seminars, simulation training and clinical exercises, students also learn how to assert themselves in a medical team, make diagnoses and take ethical decisions. LSMU thus offers a practical study environment that does justice to the medical profession.

Supervision, small groups & modern didactics

The student-to-staff ratio at LSMU is excellent: in small groups of around 8-12 students, individual learning needs are catered for intensively. Teaching is interactive, at eye level and with strong reference to current medical guidelines.

In addition to lectures and tutorials, the university attaches particular importance to:

  • Problem-based learning (PBL)

  • Peer-to-peer learning

  • Case-based learning

  • Simulation-based training

These methods promote independent thinking, clinical decision-making and sustainable knowledge transfer - perfect for aspiring doctors who don't just want to learn by heart, but really want to understand.

Admission & admission procedure

Application without NC - clear admission routes

A big plus point of studying medicine in Kaunas is the admission without NC. This means that you don't need a 1.0 A-level to get a Medizinstudienplatz to get in. Admission is not based on your A-level grades, but on a transparent process that assesses all applicants fairly. This also means: no waiting time, no selection limits - only your personal performance counts.

A Medical studies without NC opens up the path to a medical career for many committed young people - regardless of the school system, random quotas or bureaucratic barriers.

Content of the multiple-choice entrance test (biology/chemistry)

Part of the application process is a written multiple-choice entrance test consisting of a total of 60 questions:

  • 30 Questions Biology

  • 30 Questions Chemistry

The subject matter is based on the curriculum of the upper secondary school and covers classic topics such as cell biology, genetics, metabolism, organ functions, chemical bonds, acid-base balance and organic compounds.

The test language is English, and no unnecessary detail is asked. The aim is to demonstrate a solid basic understanding of science - no more, but also no less.

Interview and English test (B2 level) for language proficiency

Following the written exam, a personal online interview takes place via Zoom. This is less about medical expertise and more about your motivation, language skills and personal suitability for the medical profession.

If your English is not quite at B2 level yet, there is also the option of taking an official language test, e.g. TOEFL or IELTS. You can also register for a corresponding placement test directly via LSMU or futuredoctor.

The interview is also an opportunity to showcase your strengths, interests and goals - so make the most of it!
