Comenius University Bratislava is one of the leading medical universities in Eastern Europe. With its fully English-language degree programme in human medicine and dentistry, it specifically appeals to international students. The degree is recognised throughout Europe - including Germany and Austria - in accordance with EU Directive 2005/36/EC. This enables direct entry into specialist training without additional examinations.

The university not only impresses with its academic quality, but also with its practice-orientated concept and close supervision. It regularly performs very well in international comparisons - including in rankings such as the "Round World Teaching Ranking".

Programme structure: Duration, content and language of instruction

The full-time degree programme lasts 12 semesters (6 years). You can start the programme in the summer or winter semester. The language of instruction is English throughout the programme, which means that students are not only well prepared for an international career in terms of their subject, but also linguistically.

The programme structure combines traditional lectures with practice-based units in small groups, supplemented by:

  • Regular interim tests

  • Practical exercises in the laboratory and clinic

  • Intensive care by specialised medical staff

This structure creates an efficient and application-orientated learning environment.

Degrees: MUDr. and MDDr. at a glance

Upon successful completion, students are awarded the following academic titles:

  • MUDr. (medicinae universae doctor) for the Humanmedizin Studium - corresponds to the Austrian Dr med. univ.

  • MDDr. (medicinae dentalis doctor) for dentistry

Both titles can be used throughout the EU. The degree enables you to apply directly for a licence to practise medicine.

Studying medicine in Bratislava: certificates and practical relevance

At least 30 ECTS credits must be earned per semester. These are awarded through examinations in various subjects. The timetable is tightly organised and places great emphasis on regular performance reviews and practical lessons.

Elements of everyday study life:

  • Weekly test formats

  • Small groups of about 10 people

  • Practical exercises in clinics

  • Lectures and seminars

  • Personal support from lecturers and doctors

This combination ensures a high quality of education and prepares students specifically for their future careers.

Slovakian lessons: language preparation for the clinic

Even though medical lessons are taught in English, Slovakian is a compulsory subject in the first two years. This is because some of the communication with patients in the local clinics is in Slovakian. However, we know from the experience of our students that the doctors treating them always endeavour to facilitate patient contact in English or German.

The language course teaches students basic forms of expression and medical vocabulary - specially tailored for later use in a clinical environment. This not only enables integration in everyday hospital life, but also in everyday life in Bratislava.

Everyday study life: structure and learning rhythm

Everyday learning is clearly structured and highly practical. Students complete a mix of theory, practice and examination formats, which enables an even learning load and continuous consolidation of knowledge.

Weekly routines include:

  • Lessons in core subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry and physiology

  • Laboratory and clinical internships

  • Intermediate tests for learning control

  • Project work and case studies

  • Preparation for state examinations

The harmonised learning system ensures a continuous build-up of knowledge.

Exchange opportunities and international networks

The university maintains partnerships with numerous international universities. Students can take part in exchange programmes or complete a period of study abroad. Partner countries include

  • Germany

  • Austria

  • Italy

  • France

  • Czech Republic

  • Spain

  • Hungary

These programmes promote professional exchange, intercultural skills and broaden career prospects - especially for prospective doctors with an international focus.
